You will generally need an actuarial certificate for your SMSF if it was partly in retirement phase and partly in non-retirement phase during the tax year. More information about when an actuarial certificate is needed can be found here.

The actuarial certificate specifies the percentage of the Fund’s investment income from unsegregated assets that is exempt from tax. Generally, if the whole of your Fund has been in retirement phase for the whole of the year, then all of the Fund’s investment income is exempt from tax and an actuarial certificate is not required to claim the tax exemption.
